Bio

Dr. Manhart emphasizes treatment of periodontal disease and maintenance of dental function as part of a persons overall systemic health. This view is developed from his extensive background in the life sciences. In addition to his certificates in dentistry and periodontics, he also eared degrees in Genetics and Immunology.

Research
Dr. Manhart received national recognition for his research on the immunology of periodontal disease and has maintained participation in research on biofilms and diagnostic testing as well as clinical research on grafting materials and oral pathology and emerging technologies.

Teaching & continuing education
The role of the specialist is to share information with people within and outside the profession. Dr. Manhart was instrumental is establishing the dental assisting program through Billings Public Schools He develops the curriculum and lectures on multiple topics for this program. Every year Dr. Manhart gives numerous lectures and presentations to dental and medical professionals and civic organizations, through out the year. Continuing education is essential for providing patients the most up to date therapy Dr. Manhart is widely read in the developments in dentistry in particular and healthcare in general. He attends many meetings and conferences each year.

Diplomate of the Board of Periodontology
Dr. Manhart is a Diplomate of the Board of Periodontology. He is the only “boarded” periodontist in the region. Board certification is not a requirement for the practice of periodontics. It is an optional process for those willing to take the additional steps, including presenting completed cases for evaluation by board members. A rigorous recertification process is mandated by the board to keep members current in all aspects of periodontology. Only a minority of periodontists are certified by the Board of Periodontology.

Organized Dentistry
Dr Manhart has been active in organized dentistry at both the local and State level. He was officer for the Ninth District Dental society from 1999-2009, serving in all positions finishing as president in 2009. He has served on several committees for State Board of Dentistry and currently sits on the Anesthesia subcommittee.

Time line
1977-81 Bachelors degree, Human Genetics, Minor, History & Philosophy of Science; University of Wisconsin, Madison.

1982-86 Earned Doctor of Dental Surgery with Honors; University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, Minneapolis

1986-90 US Public Health Service in New Mexico. During this time his work focused on general and restorative dentistry, Periodontics, Endodontics, Oral Surgery, and Community Public Health. He continued to be in involved in research, coordinating study populations for the National Institutes of Health.

1990-93 Earned Specialty Certificate Periodontics and Masters of Science in Immunology, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Lincoln. His research was done in coordination with University of Queensland, Brisbane Australia. In 1993, Dr. Manhart received the Academy of Periodontology’s highest recognition for original research in periodontal immunology.
