2024 is a year of expansion and new beginnings, and the Academy’s new JOP and CAP social media channels embody this spirit. JOP and CAP were built to inform readers about the latest research and developments in periodontics, and these new social channels will allow readers to get deeper insights into the latest and greatest. With expert quotes, research highlights, trivia questions, and more, the Academy is excited to embark on this journey with all of you.
This week, we are highlighting a new article from the latest issue of JOP, “Association between clusters of antibodies against periodontal microorganisms and Alzheimer disease mortality: Evidence from a nationally representative survey in the USA.” Dr. Mia L. Geisinger, DDS, MS shared, “Alzheimer disease (AD) has been linked to periodontal disease and periodontal pathogens, particularly P. gingivalis. This paper evaluated epidemiologic data from NHANES III (1988-2019) to identify correlations between antibodies to periodontal microorganisms and AD deaths. In this analysis, antibody clusters to periodontal pathogens were not predictive of AD mortality. However, middle-aged individuals with antibodies to a cluster of periodontal pathogens, including T. forsythia, T. denticola, and A. actinomycetemcomitans (red-green cluster), demonstrated an increase in AD mortality of 13%. Previous studies showed that overall mortality was linked to red-green cluster antibodies. This study included a low number of AD deaths and may have been underpowered to see differences in all groups.”
