PORPHYROMONAS GINGIVALIS: A gram-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped anaerobic bacteria from the phylum Bacteroidetes. Commonly found in subgingival dental plaque, and is an etiologic agent in the development of chronic periodontal disease. A member of the red complex of bacteria due to its strong association with periodontal disease. A distinctive feature is the formation of black colonies on blood agar. Virulence factors include proteases, fimbriae, hemaglutinins, collagenases, membrane blebs, and the ability to invade host cell tissue. Formerly named Bacteroides gingivalis.
